Uncle Drew: Review by @Kush_Hayes
What started as a series of comedic Pepsi Max commercials evolved into one of the funniest movies of the 2018 Summer. Uncle Drew is 104 minutes of fun entertainment for the whole family.
Part sports, part road trip, part mainstream throwback, this comedy has a lot going for it. Overall, I think Game Night is consistently the better comedy of 2018 still but, this movie gave me some of the biggest laughs overall, to the point where I and several others in the theater were in tears.
Those hysterical feats of comedy come from none other than an unlikely team of Lisa Leslie who plays the wife to Chris Webbers Preacher character. I feel like they let these two go off book, they have amazing timing in this movie, not only in the same frame but off screen apart from another. The characters are a lot of fun and when the car chase begins you cant help but be amused.
The plot is pretty simple, theres a legendary blacktop basketball tournament happening and our main protagonist Dax Lil Rel Howery is an up and coming basketball coach with a star player as well as a team of unlikely and unappreciated support members. This tournament has soaked up every cent Dax has and thats enough for perfect comedic villain Nick Kroll to not only steal Dax’s girl, but his whole team giving Dax less than a week to find a new team.
This sets off a set of events where Dax meets Kyrie Irvings Uncle Drew and they go on to not only collect Webber and Leslie but Lights, Boots and Big Fella played by Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson and Shaquille O’Neal. While this isnt intended to be a series of complications, Bonds are strengthened, amends are made, Self Esteem is increased and an overall the love of Basketball is displayed in this fun summer comedy.
The first two acts of the movie are very funny, a well blended series of sketches that were edited together into a cohesive story. The third act is when the tournament and highlights of 3 point shots and slam dunks and ally-oops are on display.
I enjoyed this movie a lot. I think the average basketball fan and their family will enjoy this simple comedy.
