The First Purge: Review by @Kush_Hayes
Its a rarity that a series manages to get better and shorter with each edition it releases.
That isnt to say that The First Purge is a good movie, however of the now four existing The Purge movies Blumhouse has produced, this is the best of, and we will undoubtedly see a fifth edition within the next 14 months.
As the title indicates, this is a Prequel going back to the day when this first Purge is merely an experiment and located only to Staten Island and all 12 hours are being covered on this universes Red State cable news. And for a good part of the night, things are going pretty well for the citizens. Unlike the previous three movies, things arent just immediate anarchy upon the stroke of six pm.
There is a super creepy crackhead, named Skeletor who is embracing this night and setting the bar for what the night will become later in the timeline, but for the most part of the night, most of the bad is regulated to petty looting, but communities are rallying around each other, people are having block partys and enjoying themselves.
This unity only disappoints the political regime in charge of this alternate United States, and that is when they step things up and send in Mercs who go in and stir things up with intention of blaming the gangs.
The Mercs are dressed as klansmen and nazis and other awful propaganda while hunting the experiments subjects who have volunteered to have tracking devices implanted in them. Upon being promised a payment of $5000 to survive the night they are also given contact lenses capable of capturing video of the night. However its purpose is only served to look cool visually on screen in dark hallways and corridors. At no point does this movie become a POV film when it actually had plenty of opportunity to be.
This is a series that continues to improve but does not take advantage of its unlimited potential. Its gone from a simple home invasion film to an action series. Horror movies used to be more than a mentally unstable crackhead.
Three out of Six blueberries.
