Ready Player One: Review by @Kush_Hayes

Ready Player One is the newest Blockbuster Master Director Steven Spielberg brings to audiences 3 months after his Academy Award nominated movie The Post. That last movie focused on a significant moment in our recent history, whereas this movie takes us into a possible near future, that based on video interviews before tonights debut, the director contemplates might be even closer than we think, by as little as three years.

Our story takes us to 2045 where escapism leads to everyone plugging into a virtual universe called the OASIS “Where anything and everything is possible”.
The creator of the OASIS, Halliday (played by Academy Award winning Mark Rylance)  gets sick and dies. However before his demise has set up one final game and has invited the entire world to participate in. He has placed an Easter Egg in the game and the person who finds it and cashes it in will inherit what I imagine is “EVERYTHING”.

After getting out of this movie, I'm happy to say the first half is incredibly entertaining.

You're introduced to (virtual) characters you find delightful and look forward to going on this adventure with them.

The entire time leading up to this screening I wondered: “Why would a Mid-21st Century civilization give a damn about anything from the 1980s or 1990s?” - There's actually a good answer for that. The second half feels like a Transformers movie or something from the “Original Star Wars Prequels” “Its so dense, there's so much in every frame.”

The Easter Eggs they serve you here before Easter Sunday are by the Gross and if you love to recognize intellectual property then this is your movie. However, if you have kids the “Buckaroo Bonzai” references are probably lost on them.

The live actors, when they're on screen are fine. I can nitpick the hell out of this movie but Id rather leave it as positive as I can. That's hard to do when the animation isn't better than standard 2018 PS4 cut screen scenes or even 2000s theatrical Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

Things get pretty tired by the second half. I imagine on a second viewing, which I do plan to have, I can mark it to the second of when the milk goes sour.

My final thought: For a game that's WORLDWIDE, why is everyone located in Central Ohio?

Ready Player One opens in 4100 theaters today, has mild swearing, mild violence and one scene of gratuitous kissing.
