Fieldwork Brewing Cos Phi Beta Citra - Review by: @Robyn_Seto
Phi Beta Citra is a Double IPA (or DIPA) from Fieldwork Brewing. With the weather so nice as of late, I ventured out once more to a local taproom. Fieldwork Brewing has a taproom in Sacramento and offers a delightful variety of fresh beers.
The DIPA (also sometimes called “imperial” IPA) is a stronger, thicker, and often hoppier version of the IPA. Phi Beta Citra is 8% ABV, which is about average for the typical DIPA. Phi Beta Citra uses Citra hops which is well-loved for the citrusy and fruity flavors it adds to beer in the brewing process. This beer certainly features bright citrus notes, but is balanced quite nicely. This beer has a lot of body. The flavors are rich and fully realized, but nothing is overpowering. There is a slight green taste at the finish, just to remind you that this is a DIPA.
I could imagine this beer being perfect for a picnic or barbecue. I, myself, enjoyed it on the front porch of the taproom on a breezy spring afternoon. It has a lot of refreshing qualities and doesn’t make you feel heavy despite the richness.
So while the IPA certainly isn’t my favorite style, that doesn’t mean there aren’t examples of enjoyable IPAs for every pallet. Sometimes you have to go outside of your comfort zone to experience something truly enjoyable. So take a chance!
