Original Pattern Brewings Marto - Review by @Robyn_Seto
One of the more recent up-and-coming breweries that has caught my eye is Original Pattern Brewing Company. This Oakland, California based brewery is employee owned and appears to have a delightful penchant for lagers, IPAs, and sours. Their can artwork is easily recognizable; featuring the logo in a circle, surrounded by colorful designs.
Today’s beer is Marto, a double red ale by Original Pattern. Red ales originate from Ireland, and are actually considered to be part of the pale ale family. The reddish color of these ales comes from the use of roasted and killed barley. The typical red ale runs around 4% ABV, but the addition of “double” to the prefix of the name indicates a higher than average ABV. Marto sits pretty at 7% ABV.
This beer has a definite piney hoppiness to it, but the hop flavors are nicely rounded off by the boldness of the body and slight sweet taste of caramel. While not light, this beer doesn’t have too much heaviness to it. As mentioned before, the body is bold, but bright. It balances the pine tree flavors from the hops and creates a delightfully unique experience. It’s not as funky or bitter as an IPA, but still has a lot of flavor to appease any lover of hoppy beer. Yet, it’s not so overwhelmingly hoppy that it would be unappealing to the average beer drinker.
Overall, I am impressed with the amount of flavor and boldness in Marto. Original Pattern has yet to disappoint me, and I’m very excited to see what they produce in the future.
