Prairie Artisan Ales: Its Just The Juice - Review by @Robyn_Seto
Greetings! The summer has been hot, and during my time away from Polite Beer Expressions I found myself longing for cooler weather. However, it has been a great summer for sour beer! I think I have seen more sours this summer than any other season previously. I am a big fan of the sour style in all its various forms, so it’s been very exciting for me. Our beer fridge is constantly overstocked because I always see a couple new sours I just gotta have every time I browse my favorite shops. So while the weather is still hot in Northern California, expect to see a lot of sours comin’ down the pipes.
Today’s beer is a familiar style from a familiar brewery, Prairie Artisan Ales’ imperial pastry sour: Just the Juice. Brewed with blood Orange, mango, and apricot with vanilla, Just the Juice lives up to the “pastry” in imperial pastry. It smells very sweet, like a sweet fruity preserve. The flavor is akin to a fresh baked apricot marmalade turnover. The texture is fairly heavy bodied, but is lifted by the fluffy mouthfeel. The distinctive flavors of each fruit blend with incredible cohesiveness right away. The vanilla adds to that sweetness and slightly bready flavors that reminds me of a crusty puff pastry with a sugar glaze. This beer is quite delightful but very sweet, and almost too sweet for my tastes (admittedly my threshold for sweetness isn’t high). For that reason I recommend drinking this beer on its own without food. I would also not suggest letting this beer get too warm, as the sweetness increases exponentially as it reaches room temperature. However, Just the Juice is as tasty as a pastry, so you’ll probably finish it before it even gets a chance to get too warm.
I’m excited to cover more sours! I know a lot of people aren’t too big on fruity, tart, or sour flavors, but with the recent uptick in their popularity, I’m confident there’s at least one for every palette. Stay tuned! Drink juice!
