Top Surprise of 2018: Upgrade

I slept on Upgrade its opening weekend. The trailer showed that it had potential and possibility to be entertaining. It also felt like two movies we were in store for in a near future. Only one of those we would see, Venom, whereas the other, The Six Billion Dollar Man, based off the 1980s tv Series of a similar name minus the inflation. Then the reviews started coming in and for the most part they were not only all positive, but all insisting we see this movie. Yes, they made the same comparisons above, but then tacked on that this is infact not based on anything else. Its the original feature the audience has been demanding and that made me get up and make that immediate Monday Day 67 of the Moviepass experience.

I wish I knew how to convert the phrase “Believe the hype” into blueberries. I wouldnt give this a Full Six. This still gets a Strong Five for its creativity and originality. It takes you to a future thats not too far fetched. It deals with technology that may actually exist today. And our lead avatar has a personality that you appreciate and relate with.

This is, Leigh Whannells second directorial feature. And while it is his sophomore film it is not a sophomore effort as Whannells is a big piece of several franchises such as Saw and Insidious. The Australian filmmaker gets creative with camera angles while not being precious about it but still amping up the action and intensity.

Im so very glad I saw this in the theaters and that it was unedited on a few international flights. While Venom made more money, by a lot, I still stand by my statement, that this is the better movie. Ill raise that statement to, This is the best movie to come out of Australia since 2015s Mad Max Fury Road.
