Unfortunately Rampage is still not the best Video Game Movie since 1996s Mortal Kombat. Quite frankly in 2018, 1996s Mortal Kombat isnt a great movie either. Now that we got that out of the way, 2018s Rampage based on the old 1980s arcade classic and starring Dwayne The Rock Johnson is pretty damn entertaining.

What began as a game that was already based on Godzilla vs King Kong (plug a gigantic Warewolf) destroying cities all around the world has become a much more sophisticated plot.

The sophisticated plot is the weakest part of the movie by the way. You want to see this movie to watch The Rock and a Gorilla fight monsters and thats where the movie delivers. They establish those two main characters have a relationship, they have a past, you feel it and you want The Rock to save his friend and vice-versa.

I say I enjoyed the opening of this movie. I enjoyed the last 30 mins. Theres a fun 10 min subplot with Joe Manganiello that you would like to see more from. And then theres the rest of the movie thats just kind of in the way. Ultimately Id like them to either shave 10 mins off the 1hr 47min run time or give Joe ten of those mins that we dont need.

This is Brad Peytons third movie hes directed The Rock in and of the three, I feel San Andreas was the strongest of these. However I recognize the details from this little 1980s video game he managed to get into this movie and when we get to the games ultimate easter egg, I promise you I cheered the loudest in the theater tonight.

If you love spectacles and events in the theater, then Rampage is a perfect warm up for the early summer - which used to be called Spring, but nevermind...
