Top 2018 Movies NOT Reviewed: Isle of Dogs
The story is simple, infact Its pretty universal, A Boy and his Dog. Wes Anderson believes that too. So much that he set his Boy and His Dog story in Japan with the most of the prime (human) characters speaking their native tongue. What else do you really need to know? Atari Kobayashi misses his dog and risks life and limb to rescue him. The boy befriends five other dogs who help him with his quest. The kid is voiced by new comer Koyu Rankin and they didnt give him too many lines in the first place. Everyone else in this, dog or human is voiced by a celebrity and everyone knocks it out of the park.
The story is cute and the animation is fun. The movie is full of heart. You can see this was a labor of love for the director and his crew behind it. I remember seeing the trailer for this before Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri and immediately wanting to see more. I made this the 53rd use of my Moviepass card and it shot to the top of Best Movies of 2018 for me. In fact Im kind of embarrassed that I hadnt already done a review for this. I saw this two more times in the theater and buy it on iTunes and managed to do a review of Superfly; how did I not do a review for this?
Its a little longer than an animated movie usually is. And by that I dont mean my usual critique of a movie being too long, but at 1 hour 40 mins, this went 10-15 mins longer than the average animated movie. And maybe thats due to the fact that while animated, this wasnt a kids movie, nor marketed as one however kids could see this with little issue. One mother on Facebook was upset about the word “bitch” being used despite being the rare correct context of the original meaning.
Had I reviewed this movie back in March like I should have, I would have given this Five out of Six Blueberries.
