Top Surprises 2018: Den Skyldige
“This was a great surprise” is the exact words I used to end my review of the Norse Drama from Fall 2018. As noted in that review I had seen The Guilty while I was traveling in Holland and only understood some of it. I knew it was playing in limited theaters in SF yet neglected to get out to any of them. I was kind of mad at myself for not being able to schedule it out better. However I didnt, and just had to move on.
Thankfully, San Francisco is a broad hub for movies and cinema. An independant or foreign movie may release dates on multiple waves and upon discovering that Den Skyldige was getting a second run in theaters. I was even happier to discover this was going to be at a movie theater I had only discovered the other week as listed in my recap of Leave No Trace.
I had commented in my review as well as joked about it with Kai that this was “Radio Drama THE MOVIE” because so much of it hinges on sound and tone as we only have three sets to walk through. The Call Center, the other Call Center and a short hallway.
This was a very well written, well directed movie presented in a perfect little 90 min package. And maybe its because Ive only seen half a dozen foreign films, Im honestly surprised that the Hollywood Foreign Press had not nominated this for best foreign drama for this years Golden Globes.
I absolutely recommend you see this movie. I was happy to have paid out of pocket for it, not once, but twice.
