Top 2018 Movies NOT Reviewed: A Better Tomorrow 2018
Being monolingual has its disadvantages. The biggest and most obvious is you only speak one language. So I semi-understand when someone I know say they “dont want to read the movie” anytime a foreign film comes up. Not that they come up all the time as it is.
The 23rd day of January marked the 24th movie I would see courtesy of Moviepass. The listing for this foreign film would say “A Better Tomorrow 4” so going into it, Im under the impression this is sequel to the John Woo movie from 1986.
Unlike yesterdays movie, Beirut, this movie isnt available to rewatch on any platform I have. That will also make discussing this film a little difficult.
So what even bring it up? Because if a movie that can keep the attention of a person who doesnt speak or understand the primary language, I think that goes a long way. I think if you like a good action with a good story and well written characters the language doesnt matter.
Thankfully this movie has subtitles, and thankfully I also watch TV home with Captions so I can pay attention to the subject without having the volume too loud allowing me to follow this feature.
As we go along, this movie feels so familiar. And thats not uncommon for a sequel. But it also doesnt feel like a sequel. We hit key points in the film that are nearly identical in tone and vision where it is not feeling like a homage to the first movie of this action franchise. Nope this is in fact
a grounded modern remake to the film from 32 years ago. And thanks to Sheng Deng, the director, this is his vision of the characters John Woo created, to the point that only Sheng Deng is listed as the writer (per IMDB).
As I put everything together after that title card I recognized the original movie from the mid 1980s is clearly a favorite as he made sure to keep those key set pieces in. His direction is fluid as we tour various parts of Asia and this adaptation makes you want to stay with our trio of characters while even paying tribute to the original with a Chow Yun Fat easter egg.
If I had reviewed this back in January, I would have given it Four out of Six Blueberries.
Even the posters for this movie are fantastic…
