Vice: Review by @Kush_Hayes
Dick Cheney has a heart. Actually he has two. Thats not a poetic metaphor. Its one of the facts Writer Director Adam McKay could pull up on the former Vice President played by Christian Bale.
We were apart of a Early Screening Q & A with Adam McKay who states that upon getting ill after the Oscars the year The Big Short and as he was on the road to recovery he found a book on the former VPOTUS and read it cover to cover, and that made him order a few more books on the man and that got the ball rolling.
That might be a broad statement but again, thats kind of what the director has to work with on the Motive of the VP. We are even treated to a title card at the beginning that explains [paraphrase] many personal details on Cheney are not public like other public figures.
Christian Bale never plays the VP over the top. Based on the directors statement, Bale studied every piece of media available on Cheney and worked his character on that. Bale never plays the character as “evil” or of “lower moral” but plays it like a man who was told by his wife to get his shit together and be more than he is.
While Bale is good and disappears into his role, its Amy Adams who as Lynne Cheney, The King Maker, commands respect in every scene she is in and mixes very good chemistry with her lead including a great love scene where the two of them just go into Shakespearean prose.
Steve Carrell steals all the scenes from Bale in their scenes together playing Bales Superior and eventual subordinate Donald Rumsfeld. Everytime you see Carrell on screen he makes you wish the movie was about him. Maybe in 2 years we’ll get “Rummy”.
The movie has sharp comedy. And while it moves fast it also takes its time to explain the situation presented on screen at the time aided by Jessie Plemons coming in with the narration
I think this is definitely one of the best movies of 2018 and look forward to seeing what it gets nominated for in January.
