Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse - Review by @Kush_Hayes
The visuals for Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse have had my attention ever since SONY released an early teaser trailer for their future December 2018 release. Not a movie. Not a cartoon. Not exactly a motion comic book on the big screen. But a perfect mixure of those three plus some elements that were clearly made for 3D yet had to be reconverted to the 2D screen I saw this early preview on. The last half of that sentence I would discover maybe 80 mins into our nearly two hour feature. Thats another unique element of this movie, is its runtime. Most animated features, regardless of who the desired audience is for, they’re usually 90 mins or less. Having spelled that out, I never felt that length. I never checked my watch. I never felt this movie drag when its trying to build up its characters. They experiment with the sound a lot in the from the start of this movie, just so you know its not the theater sound system.
I dont own too many Spider-Man comics, and what I do know have come from the movies in the last 16 years. So when we meet our new protagonist Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore, its literally with fresh eyes. Miles comes from a good family. Cop Dad. Mom Nurse. Goes to a prep school on the other side of the city. And then one night, with his uncle, tagging abandoned subway tunnels, as all kids do in NY! - he is bit by a radioactive spider for no reason at all, other than our movie needs to happen. Its a fun build up for a throw away conclusion. When Miles realizes that hes transforming, he goes back to the subway tunnel and manages to be right in the middle of a fight between The Real Spider-Man and The Green Goblin - who looks five times bigger than any iteration Ive seen of him and he looks terrifying. This fight is taking place in some center where a hydron-collider is about to open a hole in TIME AND SPACE!!!! This is all funded by our favorite murderous multi-millionaire Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin.
Kingpin, who looks great, his motive to play with these big scientific toys is that at some point, in an altercation with The Real Spider-Man, his wife and son died. There are no real details of how they died, but the motive is to open a doorway to another universe where another version of them may live. Well, Kingpin gets that door open, and as big scientific events will be, things go wrong. Not only do they not find his family, but Five other Spider-mans are pulled over. Its a bad-bad-bad situation for all. Whats that mean? Fisk now has Five Spider-Mans to deal with, and theyre stuck in a different dimension and their bodies are all not responding well to it - showcasing more interesting animation effects.
The Five Spider-Mans are all fantastic, and I love how their art styles contrast with the world theyre in. Personally, I love Spider-Ham, however Spider-Man Noir was providing a lot of great dialogue and I wish we had more time with the Manga Character Peni Parker and her “SP//dr” Mech Suit - I dont even know how to pronounce that and thanks to Nerdist.com for explaining it to me.
Is there anything bad about this movie Kush? I was disappointed by the final resolution between Miles Morales and Kingpin. I dont really even remember it. Thats really it. I love the animation. I dug the story. All the voice talents are great in this: Mahershala Ali, Chris Pine, Nic Cage, Zoe Kravitz, Jon Mulany, Hailee Steinfeld, and Jake Johnson all take over these roles. I will be seeing this again, I really want to see it again in 3D.
