The Forever Purge: Review by @Kush_Hayes
When we last left things in the Purge Universe, in 2016s the citizens of the New Founding Fathers of America voted on abolishing the Purge Holiday that had been enacted for a decade. Well, I dont know how much time has passed since then, but its announced in the opening credits that The Purge was reenacted by the NFFA. Thats got to be a bummer no matter who you are, including our main characters who are two Mexican citizens who go out of their way to cross the border into Texas for a new life.
We peek in on Juan and Adela 10 months after crossing the border and Juan is a prominent ranch hand breaking horses and doing it better than the bosses own son. Adela is assisting in managing a meat packing station. Helping others new to the country acclimate to the new environment. And while this year is their first Purge night it comes off as more of an inconvenience than a regular night in certain areas of Mexico as passively mentioned in a rooftop conversation between Adela and one of the paid guards for the one shelter her and Juan as well as the rest of the community.
The Purge comes and goes and at first it seems like all is normal the next day. The city will send out sanitation workers to pick up dead bodies, clear the road and wash the blood off the streets, except one group has decided that 12 hours once a year isnt enough and the Forever Purge protocol begins. Its announced that both Canada and Mexico will keep its borders open for anyone seeking safety and Its up to our favorite couple here to team up with the disgruntled son and his pregnant wife along with two others to seek salvation South of the Border.
We see all the usual murder death kill purging you would expect from this series. But I do applaud it for making our characters who do have natural conflict and both of them setting aside differences to protect their loved ones.
Where most of the Purge films begin with a looming threat of a main antagonist, this movie decides to just create one before the 2nd act ends just so we can have a chase, a show down and an exhibition of uniting to overcome a shared cause.
And while these movies have never been high art, there are several inconsistencies that make you ask out loud in the theater, where everyone can hear you ask the following:
Why couldnt you just go back into your well armed fortress?
How is your big rig bullet proof?
Were those goth kids really just hanging out among those dead bodies waiting for people to pass by to kill?
I guess The Forever Purge is a huge surprise to the characters in the story, but why wouldnt we as the audience see the conspiracy of The Forever Purge being discussed?
How would Federal Agents not know about a conspiracy to keep the Purge going longer than 12 hours?
Who is the tip of the spear behind The Forever Purge?
If youre a fan of the series, you should enjoy this. I like that it tries to show another unique perspective. Visually its maybe the least impressive. Director Everardo Gout keeps the action going but never finds a way to make you care about your main six characters as they continue to overcome every trap and dead end they wind up walking into. Blumhouse and Universal have teased that this is supposed to be the final purge, but I think we all know thats a load of bullshit and that we will see a sixth exhibition of bloodlust and mayhem.
