Mid90s: Review by @Kush_Hayes
In 1995 Jonah Hill saw the Larry Clark movie Kids and said “I must make My Kids also (but not so sleazy)!” And thus he did. And its good. But for me its a long 90 mins. While I recognize this as a passion project for him, I see it as nothing more than Nostalgia Porn.
The first 15 mins of this movie hits you over the head with 90s reference after 90s reference. I feel like half of the movies budget was spent on licensing for this first 15 mins.
When we meet our main characters family, they are at the oldest brothers 18th birthday at whatever pizza parlor in their neighborhood. Mom is embarrassing the man-child as moms do on this day especially at this milestone. And Stevie, our main character, who looks up to his brother, but has his kindness treated poorly at receiving a gift he probably really enjoyed.
Eventually, Stevie just starts hanging out with the guys at the local skate shop. Other than their names and a brief monologue of where each of them are in their lives outside of the shop, we dont learn much about them and whereas with Kids, and its day in the life, after 6 to 9 months with these characters, our set up has no pay off.
I guess Jonah Hills tall lanky avatar becomes a film maker. But we are left to our imaginations of what the Beta, the Burnout, Stevie and their Guide go through as well as what becomes of them.
I think this is a well made film. I like the soundtrack. I chuckled at the teenage milestones knuckleheads our age went through at this time. But it has no ending and I dont really appreciate that. I also didnt understand the use of displaying the movie in a 4:3 aspect ratio. Yes in the 1990s we had 4:3 box television sets, but we still saw our movies in traditional 1.85:1-2.85:1 ratios in the theater - when cup holders in your chair were BRAND NEW and MAYBE just MAYBE it rocked.
