When trailers for the first horror movie of the Halloween season started circulating, this movie looked just so dumb. When it came time to pick the movie for the review currently being written, I reluctantly picked this one because I thought this might be just tolerable. Now add to the fact that I am currently jet lagged from my travels to Holland this past week and as we begin our movie I am falling asleep through the trailers and opening credits.
This review is doomed.
Then we get the first kill and it is a nice surprise. We get tension, we get character development of our killer without ever revealing his identity, we get just enough gore and just enough to leave to our imagination.
Now I’m awake. I’m surprised I didn’t see Blumhouses name attached to this, and relieved SONYs isnt. This horror film from tiny CBS Films, takes us 4 years later into the story and we meet our cast of victims. We get: Main Girl, Hip Girl, and Tough Girl. Tough Girl is dating “Degenerate Dude”, Hip Girl is dating “That Dummy” and main girl has a crush on “Soy Boy” who the other girls are trying to help match make to produce what would be the weakest human being alive. Tough Girl is the most obnoxious of our sextet and therefore the most satisfying of the group to not make it though Hell Fest…
...oops, we jumped too far, this movie is about a serial killer wandering the grounds of “the most realistic haunted house maze” in all creation called, you guessed it: “Hell Fest”. And the legend of the murder has not only traveled the grounds of Hell Fest for the last four years, its expanded and grown yet the parks management don’t seem to be taking it seriously. It’s unclear if this is a thing every year, or if it’s just a random occurrence. Its when he meets our group of unlikeables that his story begins.
Thats whats a great surprise about this movie, is it is a throwback to those old horror movies where you didn’t know who the killer was. Our killer has no name. There’s no goofy catchphrases. Aside from the scene four years earlier, there’s no back story. There’s no convoluted plot by the parks owner. The kills in this are pretty fantastic and original.
Thats is, it’s pretty simple. The grounds are huge. The gang gets split up at times, that you think would be dumb, but all add up.
Its a traditional horror movie, minus the nudity, its got enough swearing and violence in it.
The kids abuse alcohol, Tough Girl, smoke a bong while delivering Sexual innuendos, add a body count of six and you got yourself a very decent Rated R movie.
