Bad Boys For Life: Review by @Kush_Hayes
Its been seventeen years since we saw Mike Lowery and Marcus Burnett on screen together and because it had been so long upon hearing that there would indeed, finally be a third edition to Bad Boys, my first thought was “Why?”. Again, it had been seventeen years, and the second one wasnt as great as the first from 1995. So why revisit these two? Much like another cop franchise with a straight laced family man and his wildcard partner where one is trying to do right by his family and the other is finally feeling his age after 25 years, Bad Boys is following a natural evolution of its main protagonists.
We start the movie with an exciting prison break sequence in a female Mexican prison. And like a lot of themes in this movie, theres a family reunion behind this prison break as the female fugitive and her son mean to murder everyone behind her late husbands incarceration, and that includes Mike Lowery. Meanwhile back in Miami, Mike and the rest of the force are celebrating the arrival of Marcus new granddaughter. What is meant to be old friends engaging in a pissing contest as men who are now 25 years older from when we first met them, turns to tragedy when Mike is gunned down in public by a mysterious assassin on a motorcycle. Its a pretty exciting sequence and then you discover Joe Carnahans name is attached and things make more sense for why it was as good as it was. Im happy to say Will Smith makes a triumphant recovery.
While Lowery though was dealing with his trauma, the rest of the gang at Miami PD were investigating who the assassin could be, who actually goes on to successfully murder everyone else on his hit list over six months, and they find nothing. Once Lowery is back on duty then we get an interesting Miami Mystery and we meet several colorful characters. We also meet a whole new team on the force. We only really get two of the fives backstory as well. Maybe we’re supposed to get to know them better in Bad Boys 4.
This movie has what you love, the great chemistry between Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, making you wish they did more things together, Bad Boys or misc. It has great action from a new team of directors in Adil (El Arbi) & Bilall (Fallah) who have done mostly music videos, but fit really well in this world keeping the 1990s Michael Bay spirit alive while putting their own style on it. Solid villains given to us by Kate del Castillo and Jacob Scipio who make you take their actions seriously. ...And then we get alternative motives from their characters that I wont get into, that make the last 90 minutes of this film feel heavy and unnecessary.
If youre a fan of these two, and their now series of films, you will have fun watching the third installment of Bad Boys. It makes me wish we got this even 10 years ago, but its nice to see the team of Smith and Lawrence together again. If you HAVE to see this on the big screen, I can not recommend seeing this on IMAX and do not understand what the purpose of putting it on that screen achieves besides hiking your ticket price up $2.
