Epic Brewings Pecan Pie Big Bad Baptist - Review by: @Robyn_Seto

Thanksgiving is hurrying toward us, and the weather has taken a sharp turn from pleasantly chilly to bone-chillingly foggy. It’s a clear sign that I needed to break into something with a little bit of age to thaw out my bones. Today’s beer comes to us from Epic Brewing Company’s Pecan Pie Big Bad Baptist from 2020. When we popped the cap on this one, this whiskey barrel-aged imperial stout had about one year of age on it. It’s brewed with coffee, pecans, cinnamon, and vanilla.  Coffee flavors are known to be one of the first flavors to dissipate when aging, but at 11.5% ABV, the aging was necessary to let the alcohol cool down. However one year of aging is enough time to cool off the harshness of the alcohol without losing too much of the coffee taste.

This beer is nice and thick, but not muddy. It’s very dark, very chocolatey, and full bodied. Aging in whiskey barrels pumps up the ABV and the oaky barrel flavor hides amongst the bold sweetness of vanilla. There is a distinct taste of what might be interpreted as a graham cracker crust and a nuttiness from the pecans. It delivers on the pecan pie mimicry, and who doesn’t love a slice of pecan pie during the holidays? (Apologies to those with nut allergies. You probably should stay away from this beer.)

Pecan Pie Big Bad Baptist is a rare release from Epic Brewing Co. and is part of their “Baptist Season” fall releases from 2020. Each fall Epic Brewing creates new variations of their Big Bad Baptist stout with unique twists on the original base beer. 2021’s season includes Double Jam brewed with raspberries, blackberries, and coffee, and Black Forest Cake brewed with chocolate, cherries, and coconut. Epic Brewing distributes across 21 states in the USA, so if you happen to see any of the variations out in the wild I highly recommend grabbing on and letting it chill out in your fridge for a year.
